Important To Keep Family Safe
Testing smoke detectors and fire alarms is one of the most important items to help keep your family safe. They are meant to be early warning devices to alert your family of a fire or dangerous smoke. To ensure proper function, these items need to be tested periodically.
Why Do it?
Electronic devices can have batteries that die and other parts that the wear out overtime. By testing them periodically and replacing the batteries, it will help to ensure that your family will have those warning devices in place.
How Often?
U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), suggest that smoke detectors be tested at least once a month and batteries should be replaced at least once or twice a year.
Two Types of Smoke Detectors-
Battery-powered: This type can be susceptible to worn-out or defective batteries.
Hardwired: This type is powered by your home’s electrical system, but typically has back up batteries.
Tip Time: Change your batteries when you change your clocks for daylight savings time – when you spring forward and fall back!
How Do You Test It?
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper method of testing your smoke detector and fire alarm.
Step 1: Alert family members and friends that you will be testing the alarm.
Step 2: Press and hold the test button on the smoke detector. You should hear a loud siren noise, this may take a few seconds. If it is weak or nonexistent, you should replace the batteries. Also, make sure that the smoke detector is clean.
All information and steps above are to help prevent matters from occurring, not a guarantee.

Fire Damage Tips!

Fire Damage
Fire damage is something not to take lightly. People call SERVPRO of Elk River, Becker and Big Lake frequently to ask for advice on how to clean after a fire. Here are four of the best tips we give people who ask about fire damage restoration.
Consider whether you want to try these ideas on your own or whether you would be better off hiring highly trained restoration specialists who will guarantee their work.
1. Remove Smoke Damage
With any fire you will have a degree of smoke damage to your walls, wallpaper and paint. If the smoke damage is not too serious, you should be able to scrub it clean with detergents and bleach. Soot from smoke damage is greasy, so always try to dust as much of it off from a surface before trying to scrub the surface clean.
2. Get Rid of Mold & Mildew
When the fire is gone, mold and mildew enter into houses as a result of the water used to extinguish the fire. SERVPRO of Elk River, Becker and Big Lake highly recommends you hire fire damage restoration professionals to deal with mold and mildew. It is difficult for a nonprofessional to know for certain if he has cleaned up all the areas affected by the mold and mildew.
3. Replace Carpets. Clean And Dry Your Floors
The floors and carpets end up absorbing the worst of the damage from all the water used to put out a fire. Depending on the severity SERVPRO recommends that you pull up any carpets that have water damage and replace them.
Keep in mind that water can seep underneath vinyl flooring and into the cracks in hardwood. This needs to be addressed to prevent future issues.
4. Scrub, Soak & Cleaning Dishes
Dishes are also important items to clean thoroughly after a fire because they will be in contact with your food. Scrub all dishes, let them soak in a solution of bleach and water (2 tablespoons of bleach per gallon) for at least 20 minutes and scrub some more for safety. Some items may need to be thrown out.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Elk River, Becker and Big Lake will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

- Have the appropriate amount of smoke alarms for your size area.
- Interconnected smoke alarms are recommended.

- Replace all alarms after ten years.
Interesting Facts:
- Closed doors may slow the spread of heat, smoke, and fire.
- Roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths happen in homes that have no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Fire Damage? Call SERVPRO of Elk River, Becker and Big Lake at (612) 444-3666!
It is always important to be up to date on fire safety issues that can help prevent fire damage to your residential or commercial property.
Think ahead! This will help you to prevent fire damage when burning wood in your fireplace or wood stove!
The chimney is not just a place to enjoy a warm fire, it can also heat appliances. The chimney is made to carry toxic carbon monoxide out of the house. That is why proper cleaning of the chimney can also help to prevent carbon monoxide gases from entering the home in the first place.
- Have your chimney and flue cleaned by a professional. A dirty chimney or damaged flue can cause smoke damage.
- Clean your woodstove and remove any clutter that has accumulated on or near the stove or fireplace
- Be sure that your chimney, flue, bricks and mortar are all in good condition and that you don’t have more than one heating device in a single flue.
Test your smoke alarms and CO2 detectors!
Going along with chimney safety, you should also test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. One should also replace any worn out batteries.
Make a fire safety plan!
In the event of a fire, know that time is the biggest enemy and every second counts! Make sure that you have a fire safely plan in place with all family members. It takes less than 30 seconds for a small flame to get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. A house can fill with thick black smoke and become engulfed in flames in just a few minutes. Designate a meeting location away from the home, but not necessarily across the street.
For example, meet under a specific tree or at the end of the driveway or front sidewalk to make sure everyone is out safely. Designate one person to go to a neighbor's home to phone the fire department.
If your residential or commercial property suffers water or fire damage, contact SERVPRO of Elk River, Becker and Big Lake to help!

Everyone always seems to have great advice about what you should do if you experience fire damage – call your insurance company, secure the property, call a restoration team, and so forth. Something they do not often point out is the many things you want to be sure NOT to do.
Here are a few of those things you should know about if you are dealing with fire damage at your home:
- Do not try to keep any food items. Including canned goods, which were inside the house during the fire. High heat can render them dangerous to consume. They should be thrown out and in some cases, you can itemize the cost to replace them as part of your insurance claim.
- Do not deal with fire ash and residue on your own. If you handled the wrong way it could damage walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. It could also cause respiratory distress and damage if you breathe it in.
- If there was heavy smoke, do not try to reuse carpeting or upholstered furniture. They will need to be replaced due to the chance of it causing respiratory problems in the future.
- Do not turn on any electrical appliances. This includes computers, which were in a smoke-filled room before they have been checked out and professionally cleaned. There may ash and debris inside the components, and if turned on could cause more damage.
- Do not enter the home until you have been told it is safe to do so. If you are not given that clearance due to structural integrity concerns, do not go in.
At SERVPRO of Elk River, Becker and Big Lake, we want you to be safe after your home experiences fire damage. We have the expertise to handle everything for you and get your home restored while not putting you in danger.
